Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall 2012 : Colour me fall

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is always a blast, there is always anticipation and high expectations for the major players in the fashion world. It's always a safe bet that they will not disappoint, and MBFW fall 2012  definitely did not. It was an intensive week with over 80 collections shown at Lincoln Centre and off site locations. By the end of the week you can feel a bit spent and a head full of looks you would like to be seen come fall.
The week began officially on February 9, 2012 with BCBGMAXAZRIA, the collection was a mix of masterful color blocking and fur accents. Leather jackets with a geometric flavour in the design added a bit of edge to the overall presentation. Among our favourites that day were Tadashi Shoji, Candela, and Chadwick Bell. Diane Von Furstenberg's use of lighting created a cinematic back drop for her collection. Her designs for this season reflected geometric elements that seem to be trending in other collections. There was  some nice colour blocking and separates with interesting contrasts of draping in the collection as well.

Tracey Reese's collection kept the colour parade going with lots of purple, yellow, and orange. She included short skirts and coats with a metallic gold look that added some interesting flavour. The yellow wrap coat with fur collar was a great complement to the textures and was part of the overall fur trend for this season. The accessories included jockey style hats, and heels that reflected the same colour concepts found in the collection.
Carolina Herrera's collection was grand with models sporting big hair bringing to mind the styles of the sixties. The colour pallet included earth tones, white, grays, navy, black, and abstract type prints. Embroidered and embellished skirts followed the first group of looks, that were of the darker indigo hues, and were complemented with black and of course a little fur. From the art inspired prints and slightly shorter tops to the vibrant red gown that closed the show Carolina Herrera collection kept it elegantly chic.

With Michael Kors collection you are ready for your luxury camping getaway. His models hit the runway decked out in thick knit sweaters worn paired with substantial alpaca jackets and luxurious looking fur coats. Plaid coats and fringed ponchos accented with fur. Of course he knows how to make a stunning gown and his models looked as if they loved walking down the runway in his designs.

Designer Zang Toi's collection reflected the attention to detail that is always evident in his designs. Black, white and red were the dominant colors in his collection, his models looked regal in the geometric themed red and black designs. One of the standouts of this collection was the embellished white beaded jacket and pencil skirt that was probably added to a lot of must-have lists.

The number of looks per show ranged from 20-30 on average however designer Venexiana is a force to be reckoned with sending 72 looks down the runway. Her luxurious gowns were impressive in scope and color, high fashion all the way. Vera Wang's collection was stunning, she always gets it right. Many of the looks were sheer gowns and separates with delicately sculpted tops in cool shades of oranges, blues and greens.

Overall the collections were a glam-fest of fur, big hair and brilliant colors, and some snazzy accessories. It was really great to see the trends expressed creatively in the collections without being boring. MBFW is also making an effort to highlight designers from overseas as well as talented up and coming student designers. Academy of Art University is a popular show that always exposes some really creative and talented new designers. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is one hell of a ride that comes to an end all too quickly, at least it's only a few months till September.
