Choose the perfect foundation

If you are one of millions of women who care about how they look, then you’ll agree Foundation is one product you cannot go without. Well chosen and applied Foundation can help skin look healthy, clean and ideally smooth; giving your face uniform tone, brightening and illuminating skin, while making small work of achieving a flawless look as imperfections “disappear”

Skin types are broken down into three categories; dry, combination and oily skin with different formulations to suit each skin type.

  • Mattifying Foundation works best for Combination/Oily skin. A good formulation should guarantee a matte, velvety finish and not dry out your skin, or create a feeling of tightness. Try Mac Studio Fix fluid or powder (£19.50) or Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet PLUS  foundation (£27.95)
  • Illuminating Foundation is suitable for dry to normal skin types. This foundation contains pigments which reflect and diffuse the light. As a result, the skin appears so smooth and brightened, it glows! Try Bobbi Brown Luminous Moisturizing Foundation (£29) or Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme (£30).
  • Moisturizing and lifting Foundation suits dry skin best. These contain many skin care ingredients. In addition, they guarantee a delicate sheen, which makes skin look firmer and better moisturized. Try Mac Studio Tech (£23) or Bobbi Brown Moisture Rich Foundation (£29)

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHADE

Choosing the right shade is just as important as choosing the right kind of foundation for your skin type. Going too dark or too light is a guaranteed way of ruining your look. To achieve the perfect foundation tone, use the tips below:

  • Apply several shades across the jaw line.
  • The colour which seems to integrate with your complexion, should be applied along the contours of the face with a brush or sponge.
  • If it becomes invisible then you have managed to find your perfect match.

APPLICATION TECHNIQUES

  • Finger tips: This is a classic and the oldest and method;  be sure to sanitise your hands! This technique is suitable when using liquid foundations.
  • Sponge: This is the most modern of all techniques. The best sponges are made out of latex, a very durable and flexible material. Washing with soap and warm water should increase its longevity.
  • Brush: This technique gives a similar effect like fingertips. A good foundation brush should be made of synthetic fibre. It’s benefits include, fast and even application to large areas of the face, better economy as it does not absorb product and better hygiene, due to the ability to easily clean the brush after use.

Top tips

  • Always start from the middle of the face and gradually buff out in a lifting motion
  • Excess product can be removed by blotting
  • Soiled eyebrows or beauty spots can be cleaned up with cotton swab moistened with tonic.
  • Apply foundation sparingly near areas with fine hair e.g the upper lip, near the hair line and sides of the jaw line.

Good foundation should feel like a second skin, so make it a priority to purchase a suitable foundation in the correct shade to compliment your skin tone.
If you’re still in doubt, visit a good beauty stand like, Bobbi Brown, Mac , Estee lauder and Illamasqua. They can be found in most Departmental Stores.
