Sol Afrik Fashion Week New York

The Sol Afrik Fashion Week New York event took place on Friday September 21, 2012 at Russell Simmons Rush gallery. Sol Afrik hopes to serve as a global platform for
exceptional couture and ready to wear designs from African designers. This presentation event by SAFWNY was meant as a preview of it's official launch in 2013.

Sol Afrik seeks to present  edgy, couture, contemporary, and ready-to-wear, international designers from across the African Diaspora and the World, including African Americans, Continental Africans, Blacks in the Caribbean, Africans in Europe, Latin Americans, and Asians. "We aim to improve the quality of fashion design output from African Americans, the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America, and Asia to promote global brands, and to dramatically raise the profile of fashion designers worldwide."

The six designers presenting collections were;  Elizabeth Azadi, Esosa E., Kibonen NY, Siwel Accessories, and Nyanga Creations. Cameroonian  designer Kibonen recently showed her collection at Africa Fashion Week NY this past July. Kibonen also participated in the panel discussion sponsored by the Adiree Agency and hosted by F.I.T.

During a brief intermission period, Kantaki Washington, one of the directors of SAFWNY announced that the organization has received the endorsement of the New York Senate.  She also announced that the NY Senate had declared September 21-28 Sol Afrik Fashion Week. Entertainment mogul Russell Simmons has also urged designers of color to take advantage of the opportunity that Sol Afrik has created to showcase their talent. We will be sure to be on the lookout for news of  Sol Afrik's official 2013 launch.
